250,000 Online Images Of London
The London Picture Archive has released 250,000 old images of the city online for free!
The website (available here) can be easily searched just by typing what you want in to the search box. For example, if I wanted images of Bethnal Green, where some of my ancestors lived I could type in 'Bethnal Green' which comes up with 552 images. Alternatively, you can use the advanced search and tighten up the date period; from 1500!
With the time frame of the images available; you should hopefully find something of interest to you and you could then use them in your family histories [as long as you don't sell them - check the copyright usage in the terms and conditions] to add more depth and understanding about your ancestors lives. The images are not just photos, obviously, but also contains paintings which can add a bit of colour and someone's own take of the place/person at the time.
These photos published in the Guardian show some of the photos found on the site.
It's just a short article this week, I know, as I'm very busy with it being summer and I won't be able to release an article next week so the next article will be released on the 18 August.
