Information On Gravestones
In the past month, I have been busy doing a range of work - hence why there hasn't been an article for a few weeks.
However, this week, I have been free to do some more research on my family tree. Yesterday (Wednesday 12th), I went to a few parish churches with some family members (one also a family historian) where we both have ancestors from. In one of the villages, Brompton Ralph, I wasn't expecting to find any of my relatives, in the churchyard, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a row of four graves and another all bearing, the surname Dibble, one of the surnames in the area (West Somerset) I had been researching.
I started transcribing the information on the gravestones to find a wealth of detail slowly coming out. The gravestones were very weathered so it took about an hour to write this information down word for word. However, the information was not just name, date of death and ages with the additional relationship given. They included detail such as 'for twenty years resident of the island of Grenada' and 'yeoman of Clatworthy' both not generally seen on gravestones.
Therefore, it is important to try and visit graves of ancestors and relatives as you may get lucky and gain even more information than expected that may even knock down a brick wall.
For those who are interested in the Dibble family, here are the people with gravestones in Brompton Ralph:
Row of four
Charles Dibble (died 1882, aged 66)
Frances Dibble (died 1885, aged 57, second wife of Charles)
Mary Ann Dibble (died 1863, aged 42, wife of Charles)
Lucy Dibble (died 1870, aged 15, daughter of above)
Daniel Dibble (died 1853, aged 64)
Robert Dibble (died 1859, aged 61)
Individual
Daniel Dibble (died 1919, aged 91)
Mary Ann Dibble (died 1936, aged 103!)
