Keep Checking... Budling Becomes Rudland!
For a while my Sumner line had hit two early brick walls with both my 3x great grandparents, John Sumner and his wife Sarah, disappearing before the 1871 census. Luckily I had the original marriage certificate for the two of them dated 1867 so (stupidly) I didn't check what was on the marriage certificate and read it to be that Sarah's maiden name was 'Budling'. This came up with no clear results on any of the censuses or parish records for Great Cressingham, Norfolk (where she was born). It wasn't the only place I found it is as Budling, but I've seem to have lost exactly what that was from!
Yesterday, I decided I would have another look at the marriage certificate to see if I had misread it - and I had! I mistook an 'R' for a 'B' so instead of 'Budling' it should have been 'Rudling' - or should it?

There was no Sarah Rudling, born about 1841 in Great Cressingham in the parish records, however I did find an interesting census record from 1851 with a Sarah Rudling (mistranscribed on Ancestry as Sophia - which didn't help me find her), the daughter of John and Mary, aged 9 and born in Great Cressingham! The father being 'John' matched the father on the marriage certificate (above). But still there was no baptism for a Sarah Rudling in the vicinity of Great Cressinham in 1842 - however I managed to find a baptism for a Sarah Rudland that would match what is on the census records. I then managed to find her siblings from the census under the surname 'Rudland'. On all census records that I have found for the family they are transcribed as 'Rudling' however when I checked the burials in Great Cressingham to find John and Mary they were not there as 'Rudling' which they had used for over 50 years but as... RUDLAND!!! Strangely he married in a different parish, Hilborough, under the name Rudland so I am not sure it is just a vicar not liking the name but probably just an alias.
This shows exactly why you should keep checking over what you have found to see if it is correct and you never know you may even knock down a brick wall!
