This page is a collection of links to websites that I find useful and some that you may find useful.
Free websites have (Free), websites that you have to pay for have (Cost). However some websites are free to search but you have to pay to view the record these sites will have (Cost/Free). These sites are specifically used for UK sites.
Ancestry (Cost/Free)
This website is primarily used for creating a family tree, however you can search for records as well such as censuses and BMD's (Birth Marriage Deaths) but not only that they have lots of records such as military, parish and much more! This site is free to search records but to view them you have to have a subscription - other than the 1881 Census and World War 1 Medal Rolls Index Cards. Requires free registration.
British Newspaper Archive (Cost)
As you can probably guess by the name it is a website where you can view old newspaper records. As of last check there were 8,458,932 records. This site requires you to have a subscription to view their records. Requires free registration.
Clergy of the Church of England Database (CCEd) (Free)
This website may help you find information about your clergyman ancestors or relatives. It does not require registration and can be viewed freely.
Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) (Free)
On this site you can look up your families fallen heroes from both World Wars and view some records about them for no cost. Also you can look at virtual cemeteries - just like the real ones soldiers would be buried in. Requires free registration to view records.
Every Man Remembered (Free)
On this site you can place a poppy to remember a fallen soldier of the first world war. It is set up by the British Legion and is run by them. You can give them a donation if you wish. Requires free registration to place poppies.
Family Search (Free)
This website was set up by The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. It can be used for many types of genealogical research including parish records that may not be found anywhere else on the web. It also can be used to create a family tree as well.
Find A Will (Cost/Free)
This website set up by the UK Government allows you to search for wills and probate records from 1858 to present for England and Wales. It is free to search, but if you want to buy a will you will have to pay £10.
FindMyPast (Cost/Free)
This website has many types of records that might be useful for your research and is another site in which you can create a family tree on. It is free to search - however to view the records you either have to have a subscription or pay as you go credits. Requires free registration.
Forces War Records (Cost)
This website is also for looking up war records, not only World Wars but other wars such as the Napoleonic Wars and lots more. You can also see what medals your ancestors would have been awarded for their bravery. This website however requires you to have a subscription to view the records. Requires free registration.
FreeBMD (Free)
Here you can look up births, marriages and deaths. It is a free website which requires the help of volunteers. It is part of the Free UK Genealogy (was FreeUKGEN) family along with FreeCEN and FreeREG. This website does not have all records between 1837 and 1970(ish).
FreeCEN (Free)
Here you can look up census records between 1841 and 1891. It is a free website which requires the help of volunteers. It is part of the Free UK Genealogy family along with FreeCEN and FreeREG. This website does not have all census records transcribed. When looking for the 1881 census as it is complete and free on other sites use the other sites but you may need to register to use them.

Here you can look up parish records It is a free website which requires the help of volunteers. It is part of the Free UK Genealogy family along with FreeCEN and FreeREG. This website does not have all parishes transcribed.

This website contains many types of records. It can also be used to create a family tree. It is free to search records and you don't even need to register to do so. However to view the records you will need to have a subscription with free registration.
Genuki (Free)
This website is for parish records although it has other records such as military etc. No registration is required.
Irish Genealogy.ie (Free)
This website will be very helpful if you have Irish ancestors. It includes parish records from the Roman Catholic churches and the Church of Ireland as well as other records such as Census records for Ireland (bare in mind that a lot of Irish census records have been destroyed so some of the earlier ones are incomplete). No registration is required.
LostCousins (Cost/Free)
A Website devoted to help you find your cousins. It works by matching your ancestors with other members. However, every week the LostCousins newsletter is free to read.
National Library of Ireland (Free)
This website allows you to view and find records of your Irish ancestors and relatives. Only shows baptisms and marriages.
National Library of Scotland (Free)
This website allows you to view many different types of maps from all over the British Isles (not just Scotland) you can also explore georeferenced maps and see if buildings are still there today!
National Library of Wales (Free)
This website will be very helpful to you if you have Welsh ancestors - especially with their free newspaper records.
RootsChat (Free)
This forum is different to any other site on this page. It is a forum where you can ask for help and they even have a section where you can have a photo restored and dated. The people on this site are very friendly and will help you along your way. Requires free registration to post. Also, this page has free messaging which requires a 3 post minimum. As of last check there were 205,954 members.
ScotlandsPeople (Cost/Free)
This website is for you to look up your Scottish relatives and ancestors. It requires you to have a subscription and free registration.

This website has many types of records which may help you with uncovering your relatives. It is a website which requires a subscription.Also requires free registration.

Roy Parkhouse Genealogy Site (Free)
This site has transcriptions of parish records of a few parishes in the county of Somerset. No registration is needed.
West Somerset Parish Records Transcriptions (Free)
Transcriptions for the parishes that come under 'West Somerset'. These were mostly transcribed by Martin Southwood. No registration is needed.
