My AncestryDNA Timeline
Recently, Ancestry had a special offer, of £20 off, on their DNA kit - an offer I took up. Before I go into the results, I have decided to go through the DNA process with my timeline of events as I noticed many people talk about the time it takes for their DNA kit to process on the Ancestry forum.
I bought their DNA kit on the evening of the 28th July and it took 4 days to get to me on the 1st August - I was able to track the kit from Dublin to Liverpool to Bristol to driver to me! All of this information was available to me from the 31st July via the DHL (courier service) website were you can sign up to text and email updates about your parcel.
Knowing I was going to take my test on the 1st August - I decided to not eat nor brush my teeth till it arrived at 10:42 A.M. so as to not contaminate my saliva. I did the test - following the instructions carefully and packaged the kit up. I did notice that the top of my tube, where the blue solution is stored before mixing with my saliva, did leak a little bit of the solution but nonetheless I sent it for testing. Firstly, I walked to my nearest postbox - to discover that the collection time was at 9 A.M. but in my village shop/post-office the collection time was at 4 P.M. so I walked on to there, as I was quite excited and slightly impatient, and for the first time in my life, I posted my spit!
My kit was marked by Ancestry as 'arrived' to their lab in the US, via their Irish base, a week later on the 8th August. However, only 3 days later I got an email from Ancestry to say that the kit had failed - before testing, so I imagine the tube must have leaked in the post through where some of the solution had leaked out (lucky they get you to put your tube inside a bag)! I then had to order a replacement kit which Ancestry sent to me for free.
The kit arrived at my grandparent's house, as that's were i was staying for a week. It's good to know for anyone ordering a replacement kit that you can change the address of delivery! Unfortunately, however, by the time my replacement kit arrived at 1:08 P.M., on the 15th August, I had just had lunch and therefore had to wait to take the test. This was further delayed as I had a driving lesson at 2:00 P.M. [for those that follow my personal twitter account @MrHAClarke you may know that I'm a student and am probably your youngest follower/followee]. I finally got round to taking my test at 5:40 P.M. which had to be posted the next day.
It took just short of a week (6 days) to arrive at their lab and started processing 3 days later on the 25th August. One week and 6 days later, on the evening of the 7th September, I received my Ancestry DNA results - which I will write about in the next article which will hopefully be soon!
