National Archives' Free Records
The National Archives holds a lot of information that will help you in your quest to find your British ancestors and relatives. However, visiting them in Kew may not be ideal for you right now so are putting it off for now. However, there are some free records which you can view in the meantime.
You have probably come across their website before and found a record on there that may link to other family history websites or even a chance to buy a scan of the records for around £3. However, there are some records that are free to view on their website, through discovery. In fact, there are 81 record collections that you can view for free!
You can view a list of these record collections on their website. From here, find a collection that may be relevant to you and then click it which should link you to the collection's page. Some collections may have smaller sub collections on the side of the page which link to the record set you can view. On the record page, there should be a pale orange box saying:
"This record is available to view with our image viewer. Show images"
Click on 'show images' and the record should come up available to view. You will have to search for your relatives 'the old fashioned way' and look for names scrolling through each page. Once you have found someone; you can download or print off the record for your own collection.
A lot of these collections seem to be forces records but there are many other record collections available to you as well.
