Every genealogist loves having photos of there ancestors and relatives, so when you come across one the feeling is great. But, what if it has been bent, faded or stained, hiding the face that is your relative, that few pictures of remain. Photo restoration is the answer, but that can be expensive... However it can be done for free!
For example, here is a photo that has obviously been bent and so the face of the individual in the photograph is slightly hidden:

In the photo is Kenneth Brunt in his army uniform for the Monmouthshire Regiment. Kenneth was born on the 15 February 1908 in Newport to Alfred Charles Holden Brunt and Emily Elizabeth Esther Pool. The husband of Lyra Maria Littlejohns and father to Enid and Alan. He would have joined the Monmouthshire Regiment in World War 2, when the photo was taken, and risked his life for his country. He survived the war and died on the 1 June 1974, aged 66.
Back to the photo, I got it restored for free on RootsChat, a genealogy forum with many helpful members, skilled in many aspects of family history. I posted this photo on the forum and within 2 days, I got 9 replies of repairs to this photo.
The link to this post in particular can be found here.
As I didn't want to bore you with all 9 versions, I'm going to show you one, which was kindly done up by Tommy Fonda, (tommyfromri).

I should say that I am grateful for all of the contributions by RootsChat members.
Also, they don't just do restoration, they also do: dating, photo recognition and deciphering handwriting. Some of the photo recognition they do is absolutely astonishing, but with over 215,000 members, there is going to be someone who may recognise a place.
So for all of this for free, you can join RootsChat for free, and they may even knock down some of your brick walls!
