The Queen Becomes Longest Reigning Monarch In British History
Yesterday at 5:30 PM (BST), The Queen, Elizabeth II, became the longest reigning monarch in British history, overtaking her Great-Grandmother, Victoria, by being on the throne for 23226 days, 16 hours and roughly 30 minutes. However she's not the longest reigning monarch alive as that goes to Rama IX of Thailand.
She became Queen when her father, George VI died, while she was on honeymoon in Kenya with Phillip. Since then there has been a lot of change. Over her reign there has been 12 Prime Ministers, 2 more than under Victoria, and 10 US Presidents, all of whom she met apart from Lyndon B. Johnson.
Divorce has become so much more common since 1952, going from non-existent to 42%, including 3 of her children!
She's been Queen of 32 Countries and Commonwealth Realms, although now she's only Queen of 16.
She spent the day in the Scottish Boarders with Prince Phillip and Nicola Sturgeon on the new £294 Million railway, in a steam train, from Edinburgh to Tweedbank, which she formally opened.
The House of Commons stopped for half an hour to acknowledge the milestone and so that MP's could pay tribute to the Queen.
Next week I hope to get back to a more genealogy related article!
