Underused Resource: Alumni
This week I will be looking at, in my opinion, one of the underused resources in genealogy: Alumni.
The Alumni Oxonienses has helped me with my tree - so I hope it can help you try and knock down one of those pesky brick walls! The Alumni for the two most prestigious universities in the country are online and available to search for free so here are some handy search tips!
I'll start by saying that the alumni for Cambridge (1261-1900) & Oxford (1500-1886) Universities are available on Ancestry for those with a subscription. However, using their search style it can be difficult to differentiate between common names.
So I prefer using the online copies of their alumni books. These records are similar to school records but are for universities instead.
To make it slightly easier for you as there are many books for different surnames and time periods I have labelled them below:

To search inside for your relatives type in their surname into the search box and wait for the results to turn up. When they have turned up hover over the orange tab under the book and click it when you see a relevant result.
These alumni can be very helpful as they can show a lot of information - sometimes including death!
I hope you have found this article interesting and of help to you.
