VE Day!
I’ll start by saying that part 2 of ‘Knocking Down Those Brick Walls’ will be released on the 28 May instead of today. That’s because VE Day is this week; so I have written an article on this instead, sorry if you wanted part 2!
Anyway, VE Day marks the end of World War 2 in Europe, hence Victory in Europe Day. This was the end of the war in European countries and two acts of military surrender were signed, one on the 7 May in Reims, France and the other on the next day (8 May) in Berlin, Germany.
This caused many street parties and celebrations across Europe (and parts of North America). The celebrations took place on May 8, so that is when Victory in Europe Day is celebrated. Even, the then Princess Elizabeth (Now Queen) and her sister, Princess Margaret, joined in the partying!
Because of the time difference the news reached the Soviet Union and other Eastern countries on the 9th May, so it is generally celebrated then in Eastern Europe.
I've managed to unearth a photo from VE Day; It is of Stratton Close in Portsmouth:

I've also found this website where you can share and read stories about VE Day. There are some interesting stories there – so if you get time, I recommend you to read them!
To finish, here is Winston Churchill's VE Day speech and other footage of VE Day.

Remembering Lucy Pansy June Bibby (née Shire) who passed away aged 97. A Loving Mother of 3, Nan of 13, Great Nan of 28 and Great Great Nan of 13. Reunited with her husband Robert. She would have been 27 on VE Day.
